National Charity

The Masonic Charitable Foundation (Registered Charity No: 11647003) - "MCF" - brings together and encompasses the work of four old charities - The Royal Masonic Trust for Girls and Boys, The Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution, The Freemasons Grand Charity and The Masonic Samaritan Fund - all of whom have been operating separately and independently, some since the 18th Century. The MCF is one of the largest grant making charities in the country.

The income stream of the MCF is provided exclusively by Freemasons themselves with the 48 Provinces in England and Wales regularly supporting the central fund through its festival system on a 11-year cycle (supported solely from the pockets of Freemasons), by legacies and by its own investment income.

Much of the support provided by the MCF takes the form of financial grants to individuals and their families to assist with daily living costs. Grants can also be awarded to provide specific items or services. A range of health and care needs including medical and dental treatments, counselling and mobility aids or home adaptations are supported, with funding available for respite, residential, nursing care and dementia.

In addition to the support provided to Freemasons and their families, the MCF awards millions of pounds each year to local and national charities helping vulnerable and elderly people, advancing medical research and providing opportunities for young people.  The MCF has set out to improve lives in two key areas:  “Reducing isolation in later life” and “Creating the best start for disadvantaged children and young people”.

Vital services, such as our local hospices, air ambulances, Blood Bikes and St John Ambulance are also at the forefront of consideration and the MCF regularly and inevitably very promptly contributes large sums annually to worldwide appeals for disaster relief.

The assistance that Freemasons and their families can expect from the MCF is encompassed within “Freemasonry Cares”.

How the Foundation helps communities

In addition to the support provided to Freemasons and their families, the Masonic Charitable Foundation looks beyond Freemasonry, making significant financial grants to charities that help people to live happy, fulfilled lives and to participate actively in society.

The charities supported make a significant and lasting difference to people in need. We aim to benefit as many people as possible and further those causes about which Freemasons and their families have told us they are most passionate.
